CHARLES DICKENS READINGS BY ANDREW MACDOUGALL
Charles Dickens was as much a performer as a writer; in fact towards the end of his life he made much more money from his “readings” in England and the US than he did from his writing. For these readings he chose extracts from his books (or stories he had written) to which his audience would strongly react emotionally, and adapted them for performance. Dickens had a repertoire of twelve such readings.
Andrew Macdougall provides re-enactments of all these Dickensian performances with one exception: A Christmas Carol. Click here to find out more information.

In "honour" or should I say "dishonour" of "Martin Chuzzlewit"s Mrs. Sarey Gamp, alcoholic midwife, corpse watcher and nurse extraordinaire, we will be delighted to welcome Dr. Carolyn Pepler and Dr. Judith Ritchie who will discuss:
******* Evolution of Nursing in the Victorian Era ********
Were the women who gave nursing care in the 19th century drunken menial workers, devoted selfless caregivers or professional health care providers? All three were present in the care of the sick and wounded and the profession evolved through the work of Florence Nightingale, Clara Barton, Mary Seacole, Edith Cavell and others less well known. This talk will focus on nursing in Britain, our primary source of information, with some discussion of what was happening in North America.
Both the lowly workers and the nursing sisters contributed to the development of professional nursing. Stories, letters, and hospital records give us the background to look at the way nursing evolved.
