Charles Dickens was as much a performer as a writer; in fact towards the end of his life he made much more money from his “readings” in England and the US than he did from his writing. For these readings he chose extracts from his books (or stories he had written) to which his audience would strongly react emotionally, and adapted them for performance. Dickens had a repertoire of twelve such readings.
Andrew Macdougall provides re-enactments of all these Dickensian performances with one exception: A Christmas Carol. Click here to find out more information.

The Victorian era (1837-1901) was rich in scientific discoveries ranging from John Snow's linking cholera with contaminated water and Edison's invention of the phonograph to vulcanized rubber and Perkin's discovery of synthetic dyes.
Dr. Joe Schwarcz is Director of McGill University's "Office for Science and Society" which is dedicated to demystifying science and separating sense from nonsense. He is well known for his informative and entertaining public lectures on topics ranging from the chemistry of love to the science of aging.
Professor Schwarcz has received numerous awards for teaching chemistry and for interpreting science for the public. He is the only non-American ever to win the American Chemical Society's prestigious Grady-Stack Award for demystifying chemistry.
He hosts "The Dr. Joe Show" on Montreal radio, has appeared hundreds of times on television and is the author of 16 best sellers. Also an amateur conjurer, Dr. Joe often spices up his presentations with a little magic.

Our tentative speaker, Dan Calinescu, has postponed his talk. In his place, inspired by our discussion of the Maypole Inn of "Barnaby Rudge", pubs and alcohol consumption in the Victorian era, I have organized a very fun meeting at the "Burgundy Lion", a traditional English Pub.
Judith Elson will be discussing the history of Gin!
Victorian cocktails will be available! Please join us!
The pub is on Notre Dame within walking distance of the Lionel Groulx Metro.
If you need a ride please let me know.

Gin and tonic, a cool, refreshing summer drink, yet two hundred years ago gin was one of the worst enemies of the poor who drank it in vast quantities.
Judith Elson will be talking about how gin developed and how it became such a terrible scourge of the poor in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Parliament tried to control gin consumption but without much success. The history of gin is part of the history of England; it enriched a few and helped to impoverish many. You may be surprised by the twists and turns of this story.
It was only just becoming respectable and acceptable by Dickens' time. The talk will also reflect on Dickens' work as a reformer.

Julius Grey will be discussing the contrast between Dickens's personal optimism and political pessimism and the 3 novels which will be the basis of his theory that Dickens was relatively pessimistic about the world by the end of his life. The 3 novels are David Copperfield, Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations. He will argue contrary to most critics that the second "good ending" of Great Expectations is in fact the appropriate one reflecting Dickens's outlook.
